PROJECT
The Bus Stop Signalling System (B3S) is designed to make flagging down buses easier for commuters, especially older adults and individuals with physical disabilities. By improving bus stop accessibility—a vital element of urban mobility—the B3S aims to create a safer, stress-free experience for commuters waiting at bus stops.
Parramatta's aging population presents a unique opportunity to enhance inclusivity within the city. Although the council supports senior well-being through various community initiatives, participation rates among older men remain low. Research suggests that older adults face barriers in the urban environment, such as mobility challenges, safety concerns and unclear wayfinding systems, all of which limit their engagement in outdoor activities.
The B3S directly addresses these issues by enhancing visibility, accessibility and ease of use at bus stops. This modular system, which can be installed on existing bus stop poles or shelters, features a digital display providing real-time bus information, visual alerts and buttons for simple bus signalling. With just the press of a button, a commuter can signal a bus from a safe distance, while the system’s LED signal board ensures bus drivers can easily identify the stop (and waiting passenger) ahead of time, even in low-light conditions. The B3S not only improves the safety and comfort of bus passengers but also makes driving more efficient for bus drivers.
Ultimately, the B3S seeks to make commuting more accessible and efficient for both bus passengers and drivers, while fostering a more inclusive and connected city for Parramatta’s older residents.
