My name is Philip Khamphaphirad. I am a 4th year Industrial Design studying at Western Sydney University. My personal hobbies include mechanical work on cars, photography, sketching and exercise. I am a car enthusiast outside of my Uni life and drive a Mazda MX-5.

I was introduce to the ideas of design when I was in primary school by my brothers through automotive design. Their original sketches as well as our collective interest in cars made me more aware of what design means aesthetically. My interest in industrial design was also inspired by automotive designers such as Tom Matano and Frank Stephenson. Both designers educated me from an enthusiast and student level that design is more than just aesthetics and this is where I try to incorporate my knowledge and create a minimalist yet functional and appealing design.

Oblicore Machine

PROJECT

This project focuses on addressing the concerns and inquiries of Parramatta City Council. It aims to develop a clear understanding of the issues they face and, as a designer, create potential solutions that meet the council’s specific needs.

The topic is pivoted on the built environment and its impact on the aging population, particularly with the rapid growth of the Baby Boomer generation. More support is needed to design inclusive public spaces where older adults can stay active close to home. Parramatta City Council currently offers basic amenities like toilets, walking paths, and water bubblers in recreational areas, but the new generation of older adults needs more to maintain muscle mass and overall health. The proposal aims to create an outdoor environment that fosters social interaction and exercise, considering mobility challenges faced by older adults.

The Oblicore Machine project seeks to improve health and well-being of older persons through the means of exercise. More specifically, the Oblicore aims to provide inclusivity and physical benefits, improving a vital muscle group, the core/abdomen and provide a social lifestyle that would improve their social productivity. This project investigates a need for a product for outdoor use that is intuitive and unintimidating aesthetically and ergonomically and fit for the target market.
