LETTER from the Dean

Celebrating Innovation and Excellence

I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s Widevision exhibition, a vibrant showcase of the creativity, innovation, and technical prowess of our students from the School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment at Western Sydney University. Widevision celebrates the culmination of years of dedication, learning, and experimentation, where our students push the boundaries of design and engineering to imagine and create a better future.

Our students are deeply committed to addressing the most pressing challenges of our time, including sustainability, climate resilience, and the transformation of the built environment. This commitment is reflected in the diverse range of projects you will encounter here, each offering a unique solution or perspective aimed at making our world more sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced.

The School offers a dynamic array of programs across various Engineering disciplines, Industrial Design, Architecture, and the Built Environment, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to excel in their fields. The projects you will see today are the product of this interdisciplinary approach, showcasing the synergy between technical expertise, design thinking, and an unwavering commitment to societal impact.

We are proud of our students' achievements and the way they embody an ethos of innovation, collaboration, and forward-thinking. We hope you leave this exhibition inspired by their vision and motivated to explore new ways of thinking about our world.

Thank you for joining us to celebrate the future of engineering, design, and the built environment.

Enjoy the exhibition.

30 Years of Industrial Design

CELEBRATING

Industrial Design (ID) programs at WSU celebrate 30 years in 2024 providing a timely opportunity to acknowledge the scores graduates, staff, and industry partnerships which have added excitement to a multitude of interdisciplinary projects and signature learning experiences for students. Advancing on the premise that everything is designed, and that design should make the world a better place our staff and students have strived and succeeded in advancing a worldview improving the useability, sustainability, liveability of our built environment in products and services from a central health and wellbeing viewpoint supporting our students’ skills for lifelong learning and employment agility in the digital age.

Industrial Design studies have been positioned on several campuses in our network of campuses over the years and aligned within business, health, science, computing, built environment and engineering schools leading to very dynamic and influential outcomes especially generating new value in brand and product marketing, human factors (ergonomics, biomechanics, human centred design), manufacturing materials and processes, design semantics (exploring product form), business model innovation, digital design communication for manufacture, and core embedded sustainable design professional practice with the latter considerably influencing cross-disciplinary viewpoints for decades via Design Management and Sustainable Design specialisations unique to the sector with representations to the WSU Engineering program’s national accreditation process.

Our curriculum and research consultancy collaborations have included industry projects with the CSIRO, ANSTO, NSW Health, Australian National Maritime Museum, NSW Rural Fire Service, RESMED, Maxton Fox Furniture leading to the WSU exclusive Emerging Designer Award, 3M Innovation Centre, Rotadyne, Roband, and numerous local and international contributions to participatory events including the World Design Organization (WDO), Design Institute of Australia (DIA), Design Research Society, Design Management Institute, and Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA).

The scope of graduate and staff excellence can be seen in the successful graduate local and global employment destinations including RESMED in Sydney, Singapore and San Diego USA (global medical devices with market cap of US$30B+) with essentially a ‘dream-team’ of WSU ID graduates numbering over 10, ADIDAS Germany, RODE Microphones, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and numerous other ‘blue chip’ employers across Western Sydney and Australia.

Our own university’s interdisciplinary focused ‘anti-silo’ initiative toward new 21st Century curriculum development more recently championed Industrial Design subjects of considerable interest to be embedded within four university-wide Minors leading the way and impactful beyond the size of the ID program towards meeting the UNSDGs.

Thanks to all our students, graduates, research and industry partners for making it real, relevant, and impactful and hopefully joining us on November 20, 6pm, 2024 also for the 30th edition of Widevision+ originally a ID@WSU initiative and expanded SoEDBE’s own final year graduate exhibition showcase celebration for all school disciplines, and community and industry partners.
